| A citizen of Japan, he received MD degree from Tohoku
University School of Medicine, Sendai, Japan in 1978 and
PhD also from Tohoku University School of Medicine in
1992. He was a resident at Department of Neurology, Institute
of Brain Diseases, Tohoku University School of Medicine
from 1978 to 1980, and a senior scientist at Department
of Microbiology, Tohoku University School of Dentistry
from 1980 to 1983. In 1983, he became an Instructor at
Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine,
University of Massachusetts Medical School, USA, and was
promoted to Assistant Professor in 1985, and Associate
Professor in 1990. In 1995, he became Professor and Chairman
at Department of Microbiology, Kinki University School
of Medicine, Japan. Since 1998, he has been Director,
Department of Virology 1, National Institute of Infectious
Diseases, Japan. He is also a Visiting Professor at Tsukuba
University, Japan. He is a member of American Society
of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene, American Society of
Microbiology, American Association of Immunologists, Japanese
Society of Tropical Medicine, Japanese Society of Virology
and Japanese Society for Immunology, and an Editor of
Japanese Journal of Infectious Diseases. He is a member
of the Virology Panel of US-Japan Cooperative Medical
Science Program and also a member of WHO Steering Committee
of Dengue and Japanese Encephalitis Vaccines. His main
scientific interest is the pathogenesis of viral hemorrhagic
fevers, especially dengue hemorrhagic fever. He has published
183 articles in the fields of virology and immunology.
He is married, has 3 sons and lives in Tokyo, Japan.
