Dr.
Agus Suwandono has a M.D. from School of Medicine, University
of Diponegoro Semarang, Indonesia. He started his career
in the remote area of Banjarnegara District, Central Java
Province, Indonesia as a community health center doctor
in 1975. The President of Indonesia awarded him as one
of the best Medical Doctors in Community Health Centers
of Indonesia in 1980 for his successful approaches to
the community health in rural and remote areas in Banjarnegara.
He was also awarded a scholarship for Master and Doctoral
degree.
After he obtained his PhD in Health Policy and Personal/Community
Health Care from School of Public Health (SPH), University
of Hawaii in 1985, he was given an opportunity to work
for the Ministry of Health Jakarta. In 1995, he was appointed
as the Director of Center for Health System / Health Policy
and Technology Research and Development, National Institute
of Health Research and Development (NIHRD) in Surabaya.
He has established an international training center for
health systems research at the WHO South-East Asia Regional
Office (WHO SEARO) and it is designated as the WHO Collaborating
Center for Health System / Policy Research.
In 2000, he was promoted to be Secretary of NIHRD in Jakarta
and then became Director of Center of Program Development
and Research on Disease Control in 2003. He worked closely
with Director General of Communicable Disease Control
and Environment Health (CDC-EH) and provided evidence
based data for policy input and development, particularly
in the field of emerging infectious diseases such as SARS,
Avian Influenza, Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF), Chikunguya,
Anthrax, Malaria, Tuberculosis, Typhoid, Cholera, Japanese
Encephalitis (JE) and Poliomyelitis. The EWORS (Early
Warning Outbreaks Recognition System) and the ASEAN Emerging
Disease Network were significantly developed during this
period. During the period of 1994 to 2004, he also served
as a consultant and a board member for various international
agencies such as COHRED Geneva (Council of Health Research
for Development), I-Research (The Hague), Asia Pacific
Health Research Forum (APHRF) and others. Since 1996 until
recently, he has served on Advisory Committee of Health
Research, in the position of Regional Director of WHO
SEARO. |
