Mark E Beatty, M.D.
 
Mark E Beatty, MD, MPH is a new scientist joining IVI. Prior to IVI, Dr. Beatty was the Chief Epidemiologist for the Dengue Branch of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Dr Beatty has worked at CDC for 6 years. He began at CDC in 2000 as an Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) Officer in the Foodborne and Diarrheal Diseases Branch where he lead five field investigations and assisted in many others. In 2003, Dr Beatty completed his Masters in Public Health at Johns Hopkins University concentrating on epidemiology and risk policy. In 2004 he began a one year practicum at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene as part of a Preventive Medicine Residency at CDC. While there Dr Beatty concentrated his research on tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and bioterrorism preparedness. Prior to CDC, Dr Beatty worked as a staff physician in a remote town on the Navajo Indian (Native American) Reservation in Crownpoint, New Mexico. In additional to working in the clinics and Emergency Department, Dr Beatty was the Infection Control Officer of the Hospital and the Child Abuse consultant. During his eight-year public health career. Dr Beatty has participated in medical volunteer work in Honduras, was part of historic public health events the United States such as the anthrax letters, SARS, and the Monkeypox outbreak of 2003, and conducted outbreak investigations and surveillance is such diverse locations as the Las Vegas, New York City, the United States Virgin Islands, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Haiti, and Kenya. Dr. Beatty is a pediatrician, a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and a fellow of the American College of Preventive Medicine (ACPM). His research and public health interests have focused on prevention and control of tropical diseases including dengue, cholera, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS. He is the author or co-author of 19 peer reviewed publications.
